Cádiz. Oratorio San Felipe Neri

This temple, which belonged to the former oratory of the Oratorians of the Philippines, was built in 1688 following the plans of the master builder Blas Díaz and was inaugurated in 1719. In 1764 the roof was rebuilt due to the damage caused by the tsunami of 1755. In addition to its artistic value, the Oratory has a very important historical significance: it was the seat of the Cortes of Cádiz, the national assembly that drafted in 1812 the first Spanish Constitution, known as “La Pepa”, a fundamental milestone in the history of liberalism and civil rights in Spain.
The exterior of the church is adorned with Ionic pilasters, between which are numerous plaques dedicated to the deputies of Cádiz, the members of the liberal movement who defended the Constitution. Many of these plaques were placed in 1912 to commemorate the centenary of the Cortes of Cádiz.
