The current appearance of the Puerta de Tierra (Land Gate) reflects different periods and phases of construction, beginning in the 16th century when the medieval walls became insufficient for the city's growth. A new wall with an access gate, still visible today, was built in its place, incorporated into one of the walls of the current defensive complex. In 1574, the first expansion was carried out to protect it with two bastions. The building only acquired its definitive appearance in the 18th century. In the center, the low tower stands out, above which opens the entrance hall, framed by a marble pediment dated 1756. An inscription refers to the construction of the gate, which features the royal and city coats of arms followed by a military allegory. An elegant marble portico in the form of a triumphal arch, the work of Torcuato Cayón, was built for the façade facing the historic center. The walls of San Roque and Santa Elena, named for their proximity to their respective hermitages, extend along either side of the complex and were demolished in 1737 due to the construction of the barracks within the defensive complex.
