Hugh McCallum
May 23, 1939 - April 10, 2024
Born in Cambuslang, Scotland on May 23rd, 1939, Hugh passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, in Ottawa.
Hugh was the cherished husband of Sheila (nee Alexander); loving father of Patrick (Tara), Scott (late Gordana) and Gordon (Kelly) and grandfather of Thomas and Joe.
Hugh was a proud member of 405 Squadron, RCAF and a long-time air traffic controller and DSC in the UK, Montreal, Winnipeg and Ottawa. Hugh’s quick wit, sense of humour, mischievous smile and animated eyebrows will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A time to visit with the family will be held in at Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa on Friday May 24, 2024 from 1:00 until time of service which will be held in the Chapel at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the funeral home's reception suite.
For those wishing, a donation in Hugh's memory to Centretown Community Food Centre 370 Catherine Street, Ottawa, ON K1R 5T5 would be appreciated.
from Phil Gies: Already an IFR controller in England, Hugh came to Canada in 1968 on the 'Applied Sciences' program, a Transport Canada endeavor to hire controllers from the UK. After a successful IFR career in UL ACC, in 1975 Hugh was one of the original DSCs before transferring to HQ few years later. Many will remember Hugh as the person who was the atc implemention manager for RAMP then CAATS, two major systems for radar and flight data processing. I remember Hugh as close friend; from our first meeting in Montreal in mid 1968, then continuing for more than 55 years of good times; family camping, canal boating in the UK, and so many more memories. Rip friend.
