This mosaic shows the left-side mosaic panel of the half dome in the Golden Hall (Gyllene Salen) at Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset).
What it depicts:
This panel represents Eastern cultures and empires—nations and civilizations paying tribute to Mälardrottningen, the allegorical Queen of Lake Mälaren seated in the central apse. You can see:
Stylized Middle Eastern and Asian architecture (domes, towers).
Figures in procession bearing offerings, musical instruments, or banners.
Symbols representing the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and perhaps India or Mesopotamia.
Interpretation:
This is the counterpart to the Western panel (with the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower). Together, they form a symbolic image of East and West recognizing Stockholm as a cultural and diplomatic center.
The entire mosaic was designed by Einar Forseth and completed in 1923 using a Byzantine-inspired aesthetic. The blend of myth, history, and diplomacy reflects Sweden’s international aspirations post-World War I.
