This mosaic is located in the Golden Hall (Gyllene Salen) of Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset).
What it depicts:
The figure is a stylized warrior or guardian, rendered in Byzantine-inspired mosaic using gold and richly colored tiles. It's part of the vast visual program of the Golden Hall, which blends:
Swedish national symbolism
Mythology
Historic and allegorical figures
About the Golden Hall:
Designed by artist Einar Forseth and completed in 1923.
Decorated with over 18 million glass and gold mosaic tiles.
Its centerpiece is the Queen of Lake Mälaren (Mälarens Drottning), surrounded by scenes symbolizing Sweden’s history, power, and diplomacy.
This warrior figure stands within a niche, flanked by ornamental urns and stylized patterns that recall both ancient temples and Art Deco influences. It reflects themes of strength and guardianship—fitting for the hall that hosts the Nobel Prize after-banquet ball each year.
