The area was once a vast desert with shifting sand dunes, which later solidified into sandstone layers. Tectonic plates then pushed the land upward, causing the rock layers to be uplifted and tilted, exposing the colorful formations. The distinctive red color is due to iron oxide, which oxidizes and "rusts" the rocks over time.
