Protests in downtown Los Angeles erupted on June 6 in response to a series of immigration raids in the city that resulted in at least 44 people arrested by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Without the consent of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, President Trump in turn federalized 2,000 National Guard troops the next day and then ordered the deployment of 700 active duty Marines on Monday.
Lawmakers and officials have expressed concerns that the president is inciting a situation that could get worse. Mostly peaceful protests have extended beyond Los Angeles into cities across the country, including San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle and New York.
