M81 and M82 were discovered by Johann Elert Bode on December 31, 1774 and first observed by William Herschel on August 8, 1783.

M97 was discovered by Pierre Méchain on February 16, 1781 and first observed by William Herschel on April 14, 1789.

NGC 2985 (Herschel designation I.78) was discovered by William Herschel on April 3, 1785.
