The “sinking house” of Montmartre is not actually a house that is sinking into the ground; instead, it’s a captivating optical illusion that has become a popular attraction for visitors to Paris. Located on the slopes of Butte Montmartre, the highest natural point in Paris, the building appears to be tilting precariously due to the unique topography and the angle from which it’s typically viewed. Specifically, it’s situated just to the right hand side of the famous Sacré-Cœur Basilica when standing at the foot of the steps leading up to the basilica. It’s a cream and beige building, and this deceptively tilted view is a result of clever positioning on a hillside, not structural issues.
