Crepidotus variabilis

Maplewood, Washington

Variable Oysterling
This small Crepidotus is found on the twiglets of broadleaf trees. Caps are from 0.5-2cm, dry, white to creamy and lacking a stipe. They may be lobed with irregular or wavy margins. The caps are laterally attached, with gills that radiate from the point of attachment. Gills are pale initially but become pinkish buff and drop a pinkish brown spores. Short gills are numerous. There is no odor and the taste is mild. No crepidotus should be eaten, but these tiny caps would hardly tempt mycophagy. Look-alike species include Panellus mitis and Clitopilus hobsonii, both of which have rudimentary stipes.
