Coming and Going

Quail Creek, AZ

Red harvester ants running in and out of their nest.
One of the tougher subjects I have shot - those little guys can really move.

Heck, a quick story...I was thinking of buying some beach front and building a comfortable shack in Belize...nice country because English speaking for one...any way, before money could be exchanged...I wanted to spend a night...red ants everywhere...billions of them...a shocking horror movie like experience. the last leaf cutter image, ants in a line...very interesting. Inducing Philosophical reflection, even. Traveller

Leafcutter and bullet ants in Pending, Paul.

Paul - you are right, these red ants have a strong bite. It is quite painful and lasts for a while (or so I am told by our local Naturalist who has personally gotten bitten.) When we take the kids on hikes in Madera Canyon, we always need to remind them to avoid standing next to the ants.

That’s what exhibition and pending galleries are for, something outside the parameters of the challenge.

Jim’s ants look like they would have a potent bite also. I’d give them a wide berth if I came across them. Paul

No, those are leafcutter ants. Light was better where I saw, and I got some decent photos. Bullet ants are known for having one of the most painful stings.

Traveller, one of my favorite animal shots was taken just after the bullet ants. I spun around and saw a sloth hanging from a low branch (close enough for my 100mm macro lens to be sufficient and maybe put there for our benefit). The light was sufficient to get a good exposure. So there is, not surprisingly, some variability. I can share these images in Pending if you're interested.

Are the bullet ants the ones you see carrying the leafs across the jungle floor? Paul

Rain forests are incredibly dark...our eyes adjust and we don't generally realize how blackish the layers of shadows are....there is no surprise you couldn't getting the shot. Traveller

Nicely captured. I remember trying to photograph bullet ants on the rainforest floor and wishing for more light.
