10 The Police Sped North, Failing to Question or Arrest Me for Taking Intersection Pictures

This success is again a simple demonstration of you just have to be there even when failure seems certain.

I wanted to do a very long exposure at the Costco gas station from a moderate distance. It could not be done because Costco parking lot is that busy and I could never gain a decent position to take a 4 to 10 second shot. Further,(and alarmingly), one of the workers or guards at the gas station perimeter gave me the evil eye when I was trying to set up even in a position that I did not want, but it was the only position I could find though it was not acceptable in the final analysis.

This being the situation, I went to my dry cleaners to clean a suit and thought, “What the heck, I'll shoot this intersection.”

Interestingly, in the left turn lane was a policeman that also was watching me carefully as a photographed the intersection for a couple of minutes and he then hung a rapid and emergency u-turn.

I thought he was coming over to question or arrest me, but he sped up north and I did get several good frames with mirror lockup of him leaving. A good accidental picture, just being there is often essential ingredient of photography.

GM's tech center is beautiful, and they've maintained it well. I'm fortunate to have other Saarinen buildings nearby.

Dave - I started in 1972 at the General Motors Research Labs in Warren,MI, as a research scientist. I left the in the fall of 1981 for another job & company in the Twin Cities.

May I ask what you did at General Motors, Jim? I remember Ford had a Twin Cities plant but do not recall any GM facilities there. Or were you employed by them in Michigan?

The paint on my Spider is a hot mess. I'm planning to have it corrected and then ceramic coated this summer. I still probably wouldn't rest a camera on it, though.

Our neighbors to the south had their cars detailed yesterday. They have a guy who comes to their home. He should only charge half as much to detail my Spider as he charged for their SUVs. Our former neighbor did his own work. His 1967 Rolls Royce has its original paint, and I doubt I'll ever see something that looks better.

T - I am like you. My car is just a "tool" for me, not a lovable toy. And if I take it out of the garage and onto the street, and into a parking lot - I expect to see wear and tear. Especially if I drive Tucson city streets these days where pothole are numerous, and gravel on the roads is tossed up by moving trucks, etc.
I don't like the scratches and dents, but I don't lose sleep as long as the "tool" can still do its job. And this is from somebody who once worked at General Motors.

My Car is made out of Steel (!) not cream cheese....(grin)....no dents or scratches have been noted. But thank you for thinking of the welfare of my poor car. Traveller

My first thought is how dirty my camera would get.

I tried some long-exposure shooting tonight (but not of cars). It's still in the camera awaiting further inspection.

Mr T when you said you put your camera body on your car and supported with your car keys you can imagine where my mind went, possibly Dave too but I take good care of the finish of my automobiles that sent a chill up my spine when I read that. Hold on a few while I try to calm myself down. 🧘‍♂️ Zzzzzzzzzzzz…… In through the nose… out through the mouth…... Didn’t help, I’m on my way with my auto detailing setup, I’ll fix it for you.

BTW I found and posted the very first long exposure photo I ever took when I was in the army in Germany. It’s in exhibition. The colors have faded in the past 54 years. Paul

Give it a go, it can be fun...and just keep changing your time exposure until you get a proper amount of light trailing. (Truth is, this wasn't even on the tripod, which I left extended, in my backseat...this was flat on my trunk, my keys under the barrel of the lens to give it a little elevation, the lens on the initial shots were sloping too far towards the ground...of course a writing pen would work also.

I will note that none of my initial intersection images were acceptable...they were way too hot...but before I could do new settings the police hung their U and I knew that already had my shot...so do be a little patient, a little experimental...science at work. Best Wishes, Traveller

This is the classic Traveller traffic time exposure I've been waiting for, and the wait was worth it. Maybe somenight I'll venture over to Woodward Avenue (which I have photographed extensively during the day) to try my hand.

I have never tried this this style of shooting. But I find good shots like this very intriguing. The "leading lines of motion" draw me in as I study the photo.

It does have a draw in effect and I myself enjoy this style of photography. I have a similar one I did way back when I was Army. I may have posted it before, I opened window next to my bunk set the camera on the window frame and pointed it at the front gate. I may look for it and put it in exhibition. Paul

Thanks Paul, the picture has a solidity to it...making it hyper-real I think. Maybe. Best Wishes, Traveller

I’m sure you could have easily put the copper in his place had he attempted to hassle you. “Sorry officer I’m on public property and the 1st amendment of the US Constitution gives me the right to do so. Think I’m wrong then call your supervisor.” Filming on Costcos property that’s another story but you already knew that.

Mission road in Johnson County Kansas is generally an upper class area. Garfield, that’s in KCMO and on the other end of the spectrum. Don’t want to be anywhere near there after dark with a camera or anything else for that matter.

PS I enjoy this entry and the story. Paul
