Australian Brush-turkey

photographed through my living room window
This is a member of the megapode family, and not the family to which the Turkey belongs. 'megapode' means 'big foot'.
Megapodes are 'mound builders', and this male has a huge mound of leaf litter in my neighbour's garden. The male works the mound to maintain its inner temperature from decomposition of the mulch; the female lays her eggs in the mound.
I have seen newly hatched chicks, which are independent from the moment of hatching, in my garden.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

I well remember seeing these in Queensland and to my eyes, they were very exotic and interesting. Imagine having them in your garden! V

Were happy to see them in Manley Beach, ....but then we saw them everywhere. Should be nice to see chicks in your backyard :))

Looks like he's wearing a neck scarf. Handsome practical guy with the super big feet! Look forward to seeing chicks.
