I have been to Monument Valley a few times - and have stayed in their hotel. I have also hired a guide to get further back into it than you can go without one.
To be honest, I have never thought about bringing something with me to photograph against the backdrop. I have a lot of nice photos, and it is easier today to just use Photoshop to put a scene together in layers.

Have you considered taking an object to Monument Valley and photographing it with that background?
