The Farola de Málaga is one of the oldest lighthouses in Spain, only surpassed by the Tower of Hercules from the 2nd century (A Coruña), Porto Pí from the 14th century (Mallorca), Cabo Roche from the 16th century (Cádiz), Carbonera and Punta Carnero in the 17th century (Cádiz) and Farola de Málaga at the beginning of the 19th century. The lack of a reliable lighting system at the entrance to the port of Málaga that could guide ships at night was one of the major problems that plagued these infrastructures for many years. The arrival of the 18th century allowed engineers to design a stone lighthouse that was sorely needed, although it is true that at that time nothing was done: at most, some very artisanal cranes held a lantern with oil lamps that advanced towards the head of the dock as far as the eastern pier did.It was in the following century, after the end of the War of Independence, that the Navy engineer Joaquín María Pery began the construction of the current Málaga street lamp in a very professional manner and with considerable economy of resources. The works were completed on 30 May 1817.
