Tricholoma ammophilum

Lower Johnny Creek Campground, Leavenworth, Washington

Sandy Poplar Trich
Long known as Tricholoma populinum, this recently renamed species associates with cottonwood and aspen, often in riparian habitats. Found in sandy soil, it is a pale brown or orange brown in color with caps up to 5 inches across. Caps are viscid and convex but become plane to uplifted and frequently have wavy margins. The gills are close or crowded and have a notched attachment. They are broad and cream-colored and develop reddish spots in age. Stipes are white and may reach 4 inches. They are solid, smooth, and dry. The odor and taste are both farinaceous. It is edible but not in the same league as Tricholoma murrillianum.
