Ramaria gelatiniaurantia

Olympic National Park Sol Duc Road

This stunning terrestrial coral is an uncommon species found under Sitka spruce and Western oHemlock, in this case in Olympic National Park beneath old growth conifers. It can reach large size. This one was 8 inches across by 6 inches tall. It is recognized by the dense, orange multi-divided branches wwith orange tips. The stipe is marbled gelatinous, white below the soil with yellowish tinges above. It is morphologically similar to the equally handsome and uncommon R. flavigelatinosa var. chondrobasis from which it can be told only with difficulty and usually requiring microscopy.
