Russula pseudotsugarum

Gig Harbor, Washington

One of the more common Russulas under pine and Douglas fir this member of the R. zelleri group features shiny purple caps that are usually darker purple centrally. It is of small stature, with caps in the 20-50 cm range. The caps become indented with age. The Gills are broadly attached, yellow in color and drop a yellow spore print. The stipes are white and up to 6 cm, equal and cylindrical. The taste is mild. In the photo it is found under Douglas fir, for which it is named, but the author has found it to be very common under Pinus contorta as well. It is a fall species.
