TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Local governments have started to announce work and office closures as Typhoon Kong-rey, the 21st tropical storm of the year, nears.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a land warning for Typhoon Kong-rey at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 30). Kong-rey has strengthened into a strong typhoon and is 450 km southeast of Eluanbi moving northwest at 15 kph carrying maximum sustained winds of 183 kph and gusts of up to 226 kph.
CWA forecaster Chu Mei-lin (朱美霖) said land warnings may cover Taiwan proper by Wednesday evening, per CNA. Chu predicted Kong-rey to make landfall in areas south of Hualien on Thursday.
The CWA has issued torrential rain warnings for Yilan County and Hualien County; extremely heavy rain alerts for Keelung, Taipei; New Taipei, and Taitung County; and heavy rain advisories for Taoyuan and Pingtung County. Strong wind advisories have been posted for Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Pingtung County, Taitung County, Penghu County, and Lienchiang County.
