This conifer associate in the Suillaceae family of the Boletales appears to be ectomycorrhizal with Shore pine, under which it often fruits in great profusion. The caps are 4-10 cm broad, buff at first but becoming drab olive-gray in color with reddish spots at the margin and often showing brownish streaks. The viscid caps are usually umbonate, as shown, but not always. The pore surface is initially mustard yellow, becoming old gold at maturity. The angular pores radiate from the stalk and show no bruising reaction. The stalks are up to 5-6 cm. They are cylindrical and may enlarge or taper towards the base. Stalks are buff-colored. There is a prominent and persistent glutinous ring that is brownish in color. The odor is usually mild, though sometimes pungent, and the taste mild to somewhat acid.
