Ampulloclitocybe clavipes

Beckler Campground, Washington State

Club-foot or Club-footed Clitocybe
In the Hygrophoraceae family, this species enjoys a comsmopolitan distribution both in North America and Europe. The caps are gray-brown, flat-topped at first but becoming deeply depressed centrally. They are smooth, dry, bald and in the 2.5-10 cm range broad. The gills are creamy whitish, though brownish in age, and run down the stalk. The stalk is 2-5cm and notable bulbous basally and tapering upwards, with the club-like shape giving it a distinctive appearance. The odor is fruity and often likened to grape soda. Unfortunately the odor promises more than it can deliver, for the taste is quite mediocre. Moreover the mushroom prevents conversion of ingested alcohol to harmless by-products, causing a nasty combination of headache associated with a hot and flushed feeling for hours if ingested along with alcohol.
