Ripartites tricholoma

Gig Harbor, Washington

This is a rare fungus in the Tricholomataceae family with a rather distinctive cap. It is a saprobe found usually under conifers or in mixed conifer and hardwood forests. The caps which may reach 5-6cm are dry, white, convex, with a well-defined central bump (umbo). The margins are somewhat in-rolled, and feature fine and delicate spine-like hairs. The initially off-white gills turn a beige to light brown color with age and drop a light brown spore deposit. They are decurrent and fork frequently towards the margin. The stalk is a bit longer than the cap, cylindrical, buff in color and overlain with a pruinose white frosting. The fruit bodies may be gregarious or solitary. There is no distinctive odor and the taste is mild. They are considered inedible.
