Anglesey Barracks at Dinorwig Quarry

Dinorwic Quarry, Gwynedd

These cottages were built in the 1870s as housing for quarrymen who lived too far away to return home each night. There are two rows of 11 cottages built using granite blocks. These groups of houses were known as barracks. The houses had few sources of comfort. They were lit by candlelight or paraffin lamp. Although electricity was introduced at the quarry in 1905, it was not fitted in the barracks. There were no indoor flushable toilets. The men shared two outdoor toilets known as ‘privies’. They were earth toilets that were emptied regularly.

A great image with the perspective through the old houses.

Pretty harsh, but the image here is really outstanding at the very nice wide angle. V

This is very cool and your image of it is stellar. It looks like it would have been a rough place to live especially if the weather was really cold. Thanks for the great backstory on this, John ~BV~
