The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate), referred to by locals as Porta, is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is a UNESCO World Heritage.
The Porta Nigra was built in grey sandstone after 170 AD. The original gate consisted of two four-storeyed towers, projecting as near semicircles on the outer side. A narrow courtyard separated the two gate openings on either side. For unknown reasons, however, the construction of the gate remained unfinished. For example, the stones at the northern (outer) side of the gate were never abraded, and the protruding stones would have made it impossible to install movable gates. Nonetheless, the gate was used as a town entrance for centuries until the end of the Roman era in Trier.
La Porta Nigra a été construite en grès gris après 170 après J.-C. La porte d'origine se composait de deux tours à quatre étages, en saillie comme des demi-cercles sur le côté extérieur. Une cour étroite séparait les deux ouvertures de la porte de chaque côté. Pour des raisons inconnues, cependant, la construction de la porte est restée inachevée. Par exemple, les pierres du côté nord (extérieur) de la porte n'ont jamais été érodées et les pierres saillantes auraient rendu impossible l'installation de portes mobiles. Néanmoins, la porte a été utilisée comme entrée de la ville pendant des siècles jusqu'à la fin de l'époque romaine à Trèves.
