Found under conifers and in mixed woodlands, this species is fairly common in the PNW. It features a dull and matte brown finish, often a bit darker towards the disc without any trace of green. The caps are moderately large, usually 8-12 cm or more. The stipes, gills and spores are all white and the taste is mild. There is no staining or notable odor. In typical Russula fashion all parts of the fungus break or shatter easily. It is considered edible.
