Lactarius rubrilacteus

Green Mountain, Washington

Bleeding Milkcap
This Douglas Fir mycorrhizal associate resembles Lactarius deliciosus in cap colors. The 5-12cm caps features concentric zones of orange or reddish orange colors, often developing green tones with age. The gills are orange to pinkish orange and are close, narrow and modestly decurrent. Stalks are colored like the cap, up to 2.5cm wide and 5-6cm tall. There is no odor and the taste is mild. When cut the gills or flesh exudes a dark red latex, which distinguishes it from Lactarius deliciosus with its orange latex. It is a good edible with a nutty flavor and crunchy texture.
