The river Júcar gorge is a natural phenomenon caused by the erosion of the waters of this river on the limestone rock on which the city is built and which surrounds it. This is one of those enclaves where the action of nature and man come together to create something unrivalled. For thousands of years, what can amaze us today has been brewing, if we observe it from the many existing viewpoints. The first settlers of the city used the gorges, both this one and the Huécar, as a natural moat, using them as a defensive element. Over the years, the uses and exploitation have been changing. The Júcar river and its gorge, in addition to giving us incredible images and landscapes, provide us with an incomparable setting for practising sport, and proof of this is that hundreds of people from Cuenca take advantage of this environment every day to practise disciplines as diverse as canoeing, cycling, athletics, climbing or trekking.
