Cambodia, China strengthen cooperation on veterans’ affairs

The Cambodian Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation (MoSVY) and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of the Republic of China have signed an agreement to exchange official visits between both countries.
Touch Channy, spokesman for the Social Affairs Ministry, said yesterday that at the invitation of Chea Somethy, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation of Cambodia, Ma Feixiong, Vice-Minister of Veterans Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, accompanied by Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin, led a delegation on an official visit to Cambodia from Saturday through Tuesday this week.
The Chinese visit was intended to establish relations and strengthen cooperation and to create new opportunities in the sector of veterans’ affairs.
Channy said that MoSVY and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of China have signed an agreement to launch cooperation on veterans’ affairs from this year until 2028, based on a series of ongoing visits between both sides.
“Cambodia and China are strategic partners in all areas of cooperation. The social sector also requires cooperation with China as well. During their visit, the two sides signed an agreement on cooperation between both ministries from 2024 to 2028, including the exchange of visits between officials of both countries,” he said.
He added that the agreement to exchange visits is important for developing understanding of the leadership of each country.
“We visit each other when it was necessary to exchange experiences, and our officials can have a look at Chinese leadership. China sees the Cambodian leadership as a milestone in the social sector,” he added.
On the Chinese side, Ma said that good relations between the leaders of both Cambodia and China are a strategic advantage, which makes it easier for lower-level officials to work together.
He added the Cambodia-China friendship is a real, long-lasting friendship – the nations have worked together since the 1960s based on the spirit of “community and common destiny”.
Ma also expressed his deep gratitude to Prime Minister Hun Manet, thanking him for showing leadership to name a street in Phnom Penh, “Xi Jinping Boulevard”.
During the visit, Ma paid homage to the civil war Chinese martyrs in Skun town, Choeung Prey district, Kampong Cham province. He visited the statue of late King Father Norodom Sihanouk.
Ma also visited the newly named Xi Jinping Boulevard in Phnom Penh.
In other developments yesterday, Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and also Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation met Ambssador Wang to sign the “Agreement on the Cooperation Projects of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund 2024” at the Ministry.
The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Special Fund will offer Cambodia approximately $2 million for eight projects involving tourism, mine action, agriculture, rural development, promotion of MLC awareness, regional economic enhancement, technical and vocational education and training, capacity building, and flood risk management.
Over seven years, the MLC has financed 90 projects in Cambodia, help to build a community with a shared future of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
