From Ernest Van Dijckkaai (Willem Ogierplein) to Suikerrui. Its first name was "Potterstrate" (1264). A last reminder of this was the "Kleine Potter- or Appelstraat", which ran from the current Kaasstraat to the Scheldt and disappeared last century when the Suikerrui was widened. The Kaasstraat is one of the oldest streets in the city. Initially only the west side was built on, at the end of the 15th century also the east side; usually it were the yards of the Gildekamersstraat that expanded there. Several of these back houses were cheese warehouses in the 16th century. When the Scheldt quays were constructed around 1880, the entire west side was demolished; the east side was spared.
