The Gothic Altstadtrathaus in Brunswick is one of the oldest preserved town halls in Germany, the oldest part of which dates from the mid-13th century.
It was built as a town hall for the most powerful and prosperous of the five soft forms of Brunswick, the old town.
It forms together with the Martinikirche the impressive west side of the Altstadtmarkt.
