Storm Damage 5-21-24

Our Metro has been having quite a few severe storms during the past couple of weeks.
Some parts of the Metro have even been hit by tornados. Others have seen close to 4-inch hail.

Although last night was another series of severe thunderstorms, things didn't seem as bad as some of the other severe thunderstorms that we've had lately. Other surprised people have said the same thing. However, in the morning light today, there are trees down all over the place. So, the storms must have been worse than what we all originally thought.

Above (about 40 feet long) is just part of a very large maple in our backyard. It must have snapped in the high winds. Luckily, we had our other maples (close to the house) trimmed last Fall to prevent something like this from falling through our roof. Still, who knew that one of the untrimmed trees would actually break off??? If this had happened against the house (where the recently trimmed trees stand) in the middle of the night, this tree very probably would have ended up going through the roof & hitting our bed. That would have caused a lot more harm than just a cleanup mess in the yard.

This year has been a very bad year for severe weather. Knock on wood, we have been lucky at our house so far. Losing a tree is the least of things. Others have had a lot more damage. Although the above damage wasn't caused by a tornado, Tornado Season will continue until the end of June. I absolutely HATE Tornado Season. Kansas City and the surrounding area see hundreds of less apocalyptic tornadoes a year. Straddling the border between Kansas and Missouri, it’s near the epicentre of Tornado Alley and has a high chance of experiencing storms.

AccuWeather now predicts that Derechos (inland hurricanes with winds up to 100 mph) will plague the Central Plains from June through late July 2024. So, tornados aren't the only threat. All in all, last night's storms didn't seem that bad, but they obviously did pack a punch. But if this is the worst of what we see this year, I'll be happy.
