female, Pseudalemenus chlorinda, possibly subsp chlorinda
Buckland
Quite different to the subspecies conara, photos previously posted in this gallery.
The most specialised of butterflies. The adults lay eggs only on younger plants of several species of wattle (Acacia), only where there is a rough-barked eucalypt tree within a few metres to pupate on, and only where a specific species of ant is present to protect the caterpillar.
The species lives in colonies and may not often disperse far. As a consequence it has evolved distinct local forms. Five subspecies are recognised, three within Tasmania and two on the Australian mainland.
