the Runa ("the people") are the natives of the Andes, but widely known as the Quechua, for the language they speak...they survived conquest by the Inca, and subesquently the Spanish, and then the influx of Europeans that followed...today they remain key to the agriculture sustaining the region
interestingly some Quechua words have made it into English, for example: condor, jerky (charqui), llama, quinine, quinoa, and soroche
