Eight dead, 28 injured in Khmer New Year traffic accidents

On the second day of the Khmer New Year festivities, the nation mourns the loss of eight lives and grapples with the aftermath of 28 injuries sustained in a series of devastating road accidents.

The incidents, which occurred on April 14, 2024, have cast a shadow over the joyous occasion, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.

According to a report released by the Traffic Police and Public Order Department of the National Police, 17 accidents occurred across the country, with 10 during the night.

Among the casualties, six females were injured, with 14 individuals categorised as seriously wounded, while the remaining 14 suffered minor injuries. Of the victims, 14 were found to have been not wearing helmets, exacerbating the severity of their injuries.

The report outlines various contributing factors to the tragic accidents, including four cases of speeding violations resulting in three fatalities, two serious injuries, and seven minor injuries.

Additionally, 12 accidents were attributed to overtaking violations, leading to five deaths, 11 serious injuries, and four minor injuries. One incident was linked to an illegal turn, resulting in one individual sustaining serious injuries, with three others lightly injured.
