Daughter seeks more information following British man’s death in Phnom Penh

A British woman has appealed for more information regarding the death of her father, who died after falling from a Phnom Penh condominium in an apparent suicide last month.

Sonny Suberu, 60, from London, died on the 25th of March after falling from the 22nd floor of a condominium in Phnom Penh’s BKK1 district at around 22.30pm.

He was then taken to the Khmer Soviet friendship hospital and pronounced dead at 02:40am on the 26th.

A police report concluded that Mr Suberu, an IT consultant, had taken his own life.

Police say that a toxicology report revealed no illegal narcotics in Mr Suberu’s system.

Mr Suberu – a published author who was in the process of writing his third book – had been on a trip through South East Asia, and had visited Thailand and the Philippines, before arriving in Cambodia and renting a room in the condominium on the 22nd of March.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Suberu’s daughter, Shannon Boateng, from Walsall, says she has been left heartbroken and is trying to find out what happened to her father.

“I believed I would grow up with my dad, he would be there when I got married, he’d be there to watch my daughter grow up, all of this has been taken away from me within the blink of an eye,” she said.


Ms. Boateng complained of what she said was a lack of assistance from UK authorities over Mr Suberu’s death, saying that “I feel like the UK’s government has let us down big time, my dad was a British citizen and lived in London his whole life.”

“It makes no sense for them to say they can’t do anything. They have told me they can’t bring my dad’s body home.

“I need closure for the sake of my dad, I can’t keep questioning, what happened to my dad? What did someone do? How did he die? It’s killing me.”
