Andrew’s portrait of Stumpy

Andrew, our dog walker, took this picture of Stumpy several years ago, before Stumpy became a “thing.” In a recent picture, I had related the sad tale of Stumpy, “a hollow cherry tree that will be cut down along with many others in May for construction of a new seawall to prevent the serious flooding that takes place every year at the Tidal Basin. Stumpy has become a local celebrity, with people flocking to see and photograph him in his final days, and a member of the National Symphony Orchestra even came to perform an 'arboreal serenade' in Stumpy’s honor.”

The picture I posted wasn’t of Stumpy (sorry if I wasn’t clear about that!), just some of the other cherry trees, because we could never get to his location due to the enormous crowds, traffic and closed roads. Andrew and I were talking about Stumpy, and much to my surprise, he had photographed him and still had the picture. He converted his .png file to a .jpg, and here it is.

Stumpy's story reached a lot of folks. I even saw it on the Apple news feed on my iPhone. So neat that I could relate it to you through your interesting posts- thanks!

I also read a story somewhere about the cutting of hundreds of cherry trees including "Stumpy", very sad that this has to be done. This photo is quite stunning!! Kudos to Andrew!
