Slave auctions in Charleston were big business after 1808 when the US banned their importation and price and demand skyrocketed. The auctons were in public bulidings untile this was stopped in 1850 and "marts opened along the waterfront. This is the last remaining building where this spectacle took place. It is now a museum along the section of Chalmers street that has original coblestones.
