The sad tale of ‘Stumpy’

I really wish we could go to the far side of the Tidal Basin to take one last picture of Stumpy, a hollow cherry tree that will be cut down along with many others in May for construction of a new seawall to prevent the serious flooding that takes place every year at the basin. Stumpy has become a local celebrity, with people flocking to see and photograph him in his final days, and a member of the National Symphony Orchestra even came to perform an “arboreal serenade” in Stumpy’s honor.

The Associated Press has a good report titled "More than 100 iconic cherry trees in Washington are being cut down. So long, Stumpy" plus a video of Stumpy and the cherry blossoms at http://apnews.com/article/cherry-blossom-peak-bloom-trees-removed-stumpy-dc-3de67f20140dafd20dfefcee6e20ba92?user_email=1abf368d30cb78ad1b51164305e5e437b33c3b7dea607b1765a8017b1a451f3a&utm_medium=Afternoon_Wire&utm_source=Sailthru_AP&utm_campaign=AfternoonWire_March22_2024&utm_term=Afternoon%20Wire

Very cool shot and very sad story. Is Stumpy the 3rd or 4th one from the left? ~BV~

I have seen a lot of photos of Stumpy on line. I believe I read they will be planting a bunch of new trees to replace the ones they have to take down. You got a lovely shot of these in full bloom. V

Stumpy has seen more than a few winters, but alas not the next one.

A gorgeous image but that does stink about Stumpy. He will live on!

Sad about Stumpy. Too bad he can't be saved, but these trees look nice and healthy with amazing displays.

I was able to read about Stumpy in one of the several online papers we get. The good news is the fact that they’re taking cuttings from Stumpy to hopefully have baby trees carry on in years to come.

I read about Stumpy the other day. It reminded me of our own Crab Apple "Stumpy" that may have to be removed. No Symphony Orchestra here. No crowds of tourists. Just a bit of sadness on having to let go a beautifully flowering tree that has tried so hard to survive against the odds.

glorious blooms here for sure...Stumpy does have character and poignancy, but perhaps the larger cause is the correct one...new cherries can always be planted..
