The Lamar Hunt Trophy also Comes Home AGAIN.

Patrick Mahomes made a promise after Norma Hunt, the matriarch of the Chiefs and first lady of the NFL, died eight months ago that he would help the franchise win another trophy bearing her husband’s name this football season. The trophy is awarded to the team winning the AFC Championship each year. Mahomes kept his promise.

The Chiefs have now played for an AFC title — and the Lamar Hunt Trophy — in six straight seasons and have won four trophies bearing the founder’s name after Sunday’s win. Before Mahomes became part of the Kansas City Chiefs, the team had never once won this prestigious trophy sporting their founder’s name. Having the trophy come home has been a really big deal to the city and to fans everywhere who love the team.

In 2018, before the Mahomes era, no one (except for their fans) cared much about the Kansas City Chiefs one way or the other. Back then, the team seemed to be caught in win purgatory like some other teams. They were the forever underdogs. Following the 1969 season, they were good but never great. Things have finally changed.

These days, the Chiefs have become the team that everyone (except for their devoted fans) now love to hate. That seems to be what happens when someone does better than someone else thinks they should. A few years back, who could have imaged the Chiefs would ever be in this position?

*Chiefs’ six playoff wins in the Mahomes Era is an NFL record for a six-year span.

*Chiefs' Travis Kelce sets all-time NFL record for postseason receptions.
Travis Kelce delivered another monster playoff performance to put the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs back in the Super Bowl.

*When he takes the field in Super Bowl LVIII, Mahomes will be the first quarterback in NFL history to start four Super Bowls before turning 30

*Mahomes won his 14th playoff game, which ties him for the third-most in NFL history with Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw and John Elway.

*Kicker Harrison Butker made a 52-yard field goal in the second quarter Sunday. That was his fifth from 50 or more yards, which tied Adam Vinatieri (seven attempts) for the career NFL playoff record. Butker did it in six attempts.

*This will be the Kansas City Chiefs 4th trip to the Super Bowl in 5 years.

Things weren’t always like this way for the team, and they won’t always be like this. Meanwhile, their fans have a lot to be proud of in 2024. Win or lose another Super Bowl (on top of the two they’ve won since 2020) their true fans will continue to love them no matter what, just they loved them during the 50 years between their Super Bowl wins. Fan spirit is high.
