Llacuna de lŽEscanyssada

La Encanyssada Lagoon
The lagoons are extensions of brackish water located on the coastline, always close to the sea. Their formation process is influenced by the coastal and fluvial dynamism of the Delta. The lagoons that run parallel to the coastline normally originate from a bay, in which the exchange of water with the sea is progressively restricted by the growth of one or more sandy bars. The Encanyissada is connected to the sea through the San Pedro channel. It is the most salty seawater inlet in the Ebro Delta and conditions the characteristics of the other lagoons. The water in the lagoon is fresh as it is influenced by the rice fields, being fresher during the summer and saltier during the winter. The lagoon is located on the right side of the Ebro Delta, and is the largest lagoon in the Ebro Delta. It measures 879.23 ha and has an average depth of 80 cm.The mixture of fresh water and salt water determines the production of small organisms, which are the food for the fish and birds that inhabit it.
