Hygrocybe punicea

Salt Point State Park, California

Crimson Waxy Cap
A striking fungus with initially dry or greasy blood red caps that can be up to 4 inches across. It is one of the largest of the waxy caps, often found under redwood, but at times in mixed forests. The stalks are equal and up to 3cm across, typically orange to yellow-orange with a whitish base and longitudinally striate in age. The gills have a notched attachment and change from yellowish to reddish as the fungus matures. There is no odor and the taste is mild. Spores are white. Its edibility is questionable as it sometimes causes indigestion.
