Yellow-staining Milkcap
Very similar to L. vinaceorufescens of eastern North American, this Lactarius does not exhibit reddish stains. It is found in oak and mixed forest habitat in Western North America. It exudes white latex that quickly turns yellow. Often the caps are faintly zonate, and typically are reddish-brown in color. They may reach to 11cm across with stalks that are equal and up to 6cm tall and 1-2cm wide. The gills are close and orange buff at maturity. The cap margin is not bearded and the stalk is not pitted. It has a peppery taste and causes strong gastrointestinal distress if eaten.
