Tremellodendropsis tuberosa

Salt Point State Park, California

Ashen Coral
A rather unique fungus that is the lone representative of the Tremellodendropsidaceae in the order Tremellodendropsidiales, this white-spored fungus arises from an underground tuber. It is coralloid in shape, up to 6cm tall and 5cm broad. The branches are white, slender and rounded at the tip. Typically there are few branches. A terrestrial fungus, it is found either solitary or in small groups, usually on bare or disturbed ground. The branches, unlike true corals, are tough and pliable rather than brittle. There is no odor and the taste is mild.
