07 Even Some Cactus Get Cold

Quail Creek, AZ

The tall thin ones generally need some protection on the tops of the arms.
So when we have a freeze warning, we cover them up.

Very cute. I remember seeing a tree in the California redwoods that was actually just a part of a multi-trunk system. There was a sign nearby, explaining that all the trunks were part of a single organism.

I think there is a 24 arm saguaro cactus in the National park.
8 is not that unusual

Would an eight-armed cactus be called an octi or octus?

Yes, the plural of cactus is cacti. This is a cactus with, as Paul said, multiple arms coming from the main plant; it has a singular root ball.
A similar thing can happen here with a tree called a hackberry. There is a variation where it will shoot up multiple small trunks from a single root system; this is called a hackberry bush or shrub. They won't grow as tall as a tree.

My guess is that’s a single cactus plant with multiple arms. Paul

Not to be pedantic, but isn't the plural of "cactus" "cacti"?
