The Antipope Benedict XIII
Benedict XIII, the pontifical name given to the one known as the antipope, is a key figure of the Western Schism. Behind this figure is Pedro Martínez de Luna y Pérez de Gotor, born in Illueca in 1328. He died in Peñíscola in 1423, confined in an old Templar castle and feeling like the authentic Pope of Christianity. In the 14th century, Christianity was experiencing such a turbulent time as it has never seen before in its history. The successive election of French popes had caused this country to completely dominate the Catholic Church. This dominance reached such a point that the papal see left Rome for the first time to move to Avignon, in the south of the French country.
