Stay Where You Are Laddie, I'll Protect You

Falkirk, Scotland

When I first saw this statue I thought the kilted solider was about to kill the man on the ground.
After doing a bit of research I learned that he was protecting him.
This is the Boer War Memorial.
That war mobilized the resources of the British Empire and cost the British government £210 million (over £25 billion today).
It resulted in more than 120,000 British and Imperial casualties, including 22,000 dead.
The way the world is now I am reminded of the song by Edwin Starr.
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, uhh
War, huh, yeah
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y'all
War, huh (good God)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me, oh
War, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tears to thousands of mother's eyes
When their sons go off to fight
And lose their lives
I said, war, huh (good God, y'all)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, just say it again
War (whoa), huh (oh Lord)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker
Oh, war it's an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die? Oh
War, huh (good God y'all)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it, say it, say it
War (uh-huh), huh (yeah, huh)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker
(War) It's got one friend that's The Undertaker
Oh, war, has shattered many a young man's dreams
Made him disabled, bitter and mean
Life is much too short and precious
To spend fighting wars each day
War can't give life
It can only take it away, oh
War, huh (good God y'all)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again
War (whoa), huh (oh Lord)
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, listen to me
It ain't nothing but a heart breaker
(War) Friend only to The Undertaker, woo
Peace, love and understanding, tell me
Is there no place for them today?
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way, oh
War, huh (God y'all)
What is it good for? You tell me (nothing)
Say it, say it, say it, say it
War (good God), huh (now, huh)
What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it (nothing

No one wants war, yet there always seems to be one somewhere...

Beautiful picture. I'm old enough to remember that song! A fitting refrain for this image.

an inspiring sculpture, and message as well...alas love and peace hold no weight with those filled with hatred and greed...nowadays conflicts are many, and spiralling out of control...humans can be such fools in the end..

A powerful remembrance of that song and its message.
You have helped me to remember all of my family who has been lost or forever altered by war.
This is an appreciated memorial by you of those worldwide who have been lost.

Excellent capture of the monument to accompany that anthem of the 70s, written initially as an anti-Vietnam war song, but applicable to any war any place, any time, including the miseries of today. We need this song to be played daily! BV

Many of us "Boomers" / "Hippies" were falsely labeled druggies when we were only trying to promote peace and love, seems we failed to make it stick, Mankind is on a slipper slope these days.
