This is the remaining obelisk at the entrance to the Temple of Luxor. France was going to take both and started with the smaller one, but it was difficult enough dealing with just one. Today it stands in the Place de le Concorde in Paris.
There are a number of Egyptian Obelisk's around the world, sometimes given freely by the Egyptian government. One is in London, another in Istanbul, another in Rome, Vatican City, and yet another in New York City.
