Gymnopilus oregonensis

Staircase Rapids Trail, Olympic National Park, Washington

Often mistakenly called Gymnopilus picreus, this small Gymnopilus has caps under 4cm with stalks up to about 4cm also. It is a frequently encountered fungus in the fall in the PNW, where it grows as a saprobe on downed conifer. The convex caps are brownish orange, smooth or finely scaly and dry. The gills are initially yellow but turn orangish with spore development. The spore print is dull orange. It typically grows gregariously, as depicted here. Like all in its genus, the taste is too bitter for edibility
