The Heart of a Lion

My old girl has the heart of a lion.
Della had some bloodwork done last week and the results showed her kidney levels were not good.
Her appetite has been poor as happens when their kidneys start to go.
We have been cooking special foods for her just trying to get her to eat.
We gave her 500ml of fluids under her skin and that really helped her for a few days.
Her spirits perked up when my son and his family arrived for Thanksgiving.
We just gave her another 500mls yesterday and she ate pretty well last night.
She wants to hang out with us and has been able to take short walks and wander around in the back yard.
Like every other pet owner I am praying she goes in her sleep however I know that rarely happens.
It helps me to write about what is happening to Della and I thank you all for listening.
As long as she is okay getting the fluids under the skin we will do that for her.
It helps to flush the kidneys when they are no longer working well.
Kind of like people getting dialysis.
She really should be on IV fluids for a few days but that is only a temporary fix and I don’t think she would be happy at the Vet’s office in a run.
The fluids under the skin is not a cure it just makes her feel better.
Here is my brave girl today on Thanksgiving with my daughter-in-law and grandson.
She was up for a little walk and truly enjoy sharing dinner with us.
She ate pretty well tonight!
I am thankful for each day we get with Della.
I’m also thankful for all the support from the fellow photographers here.

Della passed away peacefully in her own home on Dec. 6, 2023.
She had turned 15 years old in September.
She had a long and wonderful life and will be missed forever.

Jane, we've been able to add years of quality life (knock on wood) to some of our Chihuahuas of the past (who had terminal kidney failure) by doing SQ fluids and a special diet. Cooking special meals and giving the shots on time were worth the effort. One girl was sent home to die. The vet gave her just a few days. Since I didn't feel in my heart that it was the right time to put her down, she then ended up having another good 3 years with us. She wasn't as active as in her youth, but she was happy. Hopefully, Della will have the same resilience and beat the odds. Whatever the future, treasure every moment you now have with her.

This is a wonderful collage; It is sad to see Della looking so tired, but she is plucky and she wants to be with you. It is an agonizing time for you, you are doing all you can to make Della comfortable and she clearly appreciates your good care. But... I know the awful hours and days during times like this. I went through it with Sasha a couple of years ago and must admit it was unbearable. But... as you say, you are thankful for each day she is with you. And this Thanksgiving photo of beautiful Della is a treasure. V

All the best to Della, and to you all. Its awful to see one's loving pet deteriorate and knowing that it may be final.

These are the times when we do what's best for our furry family members and not what's just best for us even though it's difficult. You're a great friend to animals, they know it and love you for it.

it must be a harrowing time for you...Della's head seems to be hanging more than usual, perhaps a sign in itself...she has clearly been a treasure of a friend, so facing the end of her run is surely shattering...hopefully there will be a few more pleasant moments still to come...she is a star here on the website, and will never be forgotten..
