Auriscalpium vulgare

Twanoh State Park, Washington

Earpick Fungus
This small fungus, usually less than an inch broad, is quite unobtrusive and must be searched for in likely fall habitat amongst downed cones of Douglas Fir on which it grows. The kidney-shaped cap is brownish with a white margin. But flip it over and surprise! The searcher is rewarded not with gills, but rather a dense carpet of toothlike spines hanging downward. Its spores are manufactured on the spines. Moreover, the dark reddish brown stipe is always far off-center. attached at the margin. Hence the name, earpick. A fungal curiosity with a niche ecology, is is much too small to be considered for the table
